History Of The ICC World T20

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been hosting the Twenty20 International cricket competition known as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup since 2007.

Traditionally, the occasion has been held every two years. The ICC announced plans to hold a tournament in 2018, potentially with South Africa serving as the host nation, in May 2016. However, following the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, the ICC withdrew those plans.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused the 2020 edition to be rescheduled for 2021, with India serving as the new host. Problems pertaining to the COVID-19 outbreak in India led to the eventual relocation of the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman.

Eight editions have been contested as of 2022, with a total of 21 teams participating. With two titles each, only the West Indies and England have triumphed in the competition more than once. The 2007 World Twenty20 was contested in South Africa, where India emerged victorious after defeating Pakistan in the championship match held at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

The former runner-up, Pakistan, defeated Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s to win the 2009 tournament, which was held in England. The nations that make up the West Indies cricket squad hosted the third event in 2010. In the Barbados final, held at Kensington Oval, the England cricket team defeated Australia to win their maiden international competition.

All of the matches in the fourth competition, the 2012 World Twenty20, were played in Sri Lanka, marking the event’s first Asian hosting. In the end, the West Indies emerged victorious, overcoming Sri Lanka to win their first major international competition since the Champions Trophy in 2004.

Sri Lanka defeated India to win the fifth competition, the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, which was hosted by Bangladesh. Sri Lanka was the first team to compete in three finals. West Indies defeated England to win the sixth competition, the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, which was hosted by India.

Australia defeated New Zealand to win the seventh competition, the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which was hosted by the United Arab Emirates.

After defeating Pakistan in the 2022 championship match, England holds the current T20 World Cup. It is their second title overall. England made history by being the first men’s side to win the T20 and ODI limited-overs world cups at the same time.
